Cristóbal Balenciaga Museum, inaugurated on June 7, 2011, in the town of Getaria, Gipuzkoa, becomes the first great museum in the world, specially dedicated to the life and work of a fashion designer. Managed under the Cristóbal Balenciaga Foundation, the Museum embodies the mission of this organization to promote, disseminate and enhance the transcendence, relevance, importance and relief of the person and work of the great designer in artistic creation in general and in the world of fashion and haute couture in particular.
Three large spaces, four floors, six galleries and a careful selection of unmatched pieces for the exposed collection, make up, broadly speaking, the first museum designed and dedicated to one of the greatest geniuses of universal fashion: Cristóbal Balenciaga. The Museum in addition to shwocasing, on a rotating basis, more than 2,000 pieces, thanks to the support of the Foundation, have so far been received through assignments, donations, institutional or private deposits. It also proposes temporary exhibitions, in addition to didactic activities and leisure.
Playing with the echos of past exhibitions, another thing to be found, interspersed throughout the chronological journey in this new selection of works, different personal items belonging to Cristóbal Balenciaga. Garments, work instruments, letters, books, decorative items that invite us to ignore the myth and simply imagine Cristóbal as he really was.
