Donostia Decalogue

Prize: Basque culture

Do you also like to look after your things? Our language, BASQUE, is very important to us. You don’t need to speak Basque perfectly, but why don’t you try a few words when you are in San Sebastián. Try greeting us in Basque with KAIXO (hello) and AGUR (goodbye).

This ‘hamper’ pays tribute to our language and culture: a trip through the Basque language and to get a real taste of the whole Basque Country.

A careful selection of magnets with plays on words in Basque, designed to celebrate the wealth and beauty of our language. Small details saying much about our identity, to take the Basque language where you go.

A true taste

The Sagardoa Route (Basque Cider Route) is at the heart of this experience, with a guided tour of a traditional cider house. An opportunity to stroll past the kupelas or cider barrels, discover the history of Basque cider and enjoy a typical menu: salt-cod omelette, T-bone steak, cheese and walnuts… and, of course, all washed down with cider.

A local guide from San Sebastian Guides will take you on a walking tour of San Sebastián, when you will come across streets, stories and curious facts that you will not find on maps or on social media.

We will take you to lunch at MUKA, which in Basque means "ashes from the fire". MUKA is a restaurant that invites you to explore fire in all its forms and is part of the ‘Zero-waste San Sebastián’ network, the municipal project to reduce food waste. Each item of food is used here cleverly and with respect; each dish is seasonal, locally sourced and prepared with feeling. An experience to linger over the meal, mindfully…. and enjoying every bite.

Don’t forget that while you are on holiday, we live in Donostia. Enjoy the city while showing respect for others. Because San Sebastián is alive by day and at night, but people also need to rest. If you like to go out at night, don’t forget that are people trying to sleep just above where you are having a good time. Respecting their sleep needs is also a way of looking after the city.
